NEOM, Saudi Arabia’s urban living mega-project that is slated to host major sports events over the next decade, has announced the sudden departure of long-serving CEO Nadhmi al-Nasr.
No reason was given for the abrupt development, with Aiman Al-Mudaifer assuming the role of acting CEO. However, the Wall Street Journal reported that NEOM has endured delays, cost overruns and staff turnover.
NEOM’s under-construction Trojena resort is lined up to host the Asian Winter Games in 2029, while a 46,010-capacity NEOM Stadium has been listed in Saudi Arabia’s proposal to host the 2032 FIFA World Cup.
The proposed stadium would sit on top of The Line, a self-contained metropolis that would be only 200 metres wide but would stretch some 170 kilometres from the mountains to the Red Sea.
NEOM has already hosted three editions of the annual NEOM Beach Games at a number of smaller sporting facilities across the northwestern region.
“As NEOM enters a new phase of delivery, this new leadership will ensure operational continuity, agility and efficiency to match the overall vision and objectives of the project,” read a statement from NEOM.
“NEOM is a fundamental pillar of Saudi Vision 2030 and progress continues on all operations as planned, as we deliver the next phase of our vast portfolio of projects including The Line, Oxagon, Trojena, Magna and The Islands of NEOM. Through these projects, NEOM seeks to achieve harmony between livability, business and nature, and to create a better future for current and future generations.”
