Dutch football team Go Ahead Eagles has been granted permission to renovate its stadium De Adelaarshorst.
The stadium can currently hold 10,400 fans but the upgrade is set to take the capacity to 12,500.
“At the end of last year, Go Ahead Eagles applied for a permit from the municipality of Deventer to renovate the stadium De Adelaarshorst,” read a club statement.
“The renovation consists of renewing and expanding the B-side and the IJsseltribune, and improving the facilities for supporters of the visiting club.
“We are happy to announce that the municipality has granted the permit this week after a careful process!
“After the renovation and conversion of the main stand and the Leo Halle stand a few years ago, this permit allows us to start the next phase of making our beautiful stadium on Vetkampstraat more modern, safer and future-proof.”
The decision from the local government was months in the making.
On the last day available for opposition parties to comment on the plans, Amsterdam lawyer Jaap Dritftholt submitted a document on behalf of 38 local residents.
This had around 50 points detailing views of why the renovation could not take place including potential traffic bottlenecks, missing environmental reports, and noise pollution.
In 2015, the Leo Halle and main stands were enlarged to take the stadium’s capacity up to its current level.
The new plans see the IJessel stand rise to 15 meters high to be in line with the Leo Halle stand, while the B-side will increase to nine metres.
