The founders of Fenwick Iribarren Architects (FIA) are hoping to take the company to the “next level” following its acquisition by Egis.

Egis, an engineering, architecture, consulting, maintenance and operations firm, is looking to strengthen its position in the sports and entertainment sector with the acquisition of FIA, which was founded by Mark Fenwick and Javier Iribarren.

FIA is based in Madrid and was founded in 1990. The company specialises in the design, rehabilitation and consultancy of sports and events architecture.

FIA designed and built three of the eight stadiums used during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar: Stadium 974, Al Thumama Stadium and Education City Stadium. Stadium 974 was made of reusable transport containers and was slated to be demolished following the conclusion of the World Cup.

Last year, FIA secured the contract to design a new National Stadium for Serbia (pictured), with its masterplan envisioned to create the world’s first ‘garden stadium’.

Egis has extensive experience in sports infrastructure, with its projects including the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille and the Paul Biya Sports Complex in Olembe, Cameroon.

Egis’ acquisition of FIA is designed to expand the former’s portfolio of services and strengthen its presence in the European market.

Mark Fenwick and Javier Iribarren, FIA senior partners, said: “Joining the Egis Group and Egis’ Architecture Line is a great opportunity to take our company to the next level and to develop the potential of our teams in synergy with the technical capabilities of Egis and its architectural firms, particularly in the world of sport with a sustainable approach: a shared vision of both companies.”

Thomas Salvant, director of energy and sustainable cities at Egis, added: “We are delighted to welcome FIA to Egis’ Architecture Line. Their extraordinary talent, innovative mindset and commitment to excellence and sustainability align perfectly with our goals. We look forward to working with FIA to deliver inspiring, state-of-the-art sports facilities across the world which enhance the athlete and fan experience.”
