Real Madrid is possibly planning to change the name of its Santiago Bernabéu stadium to simply Bernabéu for commercial purposes.
The Spanish football side has not communicated anything regarding the change, but it has been seen in the club’s digital platforms.
The stadium’s official website now uses only Bernabéu, as do social media accounts and the Bernabéu Tour.
The potential name change is not just about simplifying the brand but could also lead to possible sponsorship opportunities.
Adding a commercial name to the stadium could become a significant source of revenue – especially during a period of ongoing renovation.
The stadium, which opened in 1947, debuted a new roof earlier in the season while work has also been gradually completed on various structural components of the project, such as the façade, roof and retractable pitch.
Any definitive change to the stadium’s name would require approval from Real Madrid’s General Assembly of members which represents the interests of fans.
Although the club sought to borrow an extra $390m (£315m/€380m) to fund the renovation, its latest accounts suggest it is in a healthy position.
In July, Real Madrid claimed an operating income landmark of €1.073bn (£888m/$1.1bn) for the 2023-24 financial year.
It is said that Real had not been expecting to break the €1bn operating income barrier for 2023-24.
The club added that it expects to see further “significant growth” in the 2024-25 period once the stadium becomes fully operational across all business lines.
