Kai Tak Stadium, which will form part of the wider Kai Tak Sports Park (KTSP) development in Hong Kong, successfully staged its first test event yesterday (Sunday) as over 10,000 people attended a university rugby sevens tournament.
Kai Tak Stadium has a capacity of 50,000 and is scheduled to fully open in the first quarter of 2025. The wider KTSP complex also includes the 10,000-capacity Kai Tak Arena and the 5,000-capacity Youth Sports Ground.
The South China Morning Post reports that some 17,500 tickets were distributed to local rugby clubs, youth groups and other organisations for yesterday’s event. The eventual attendance was 10,247.
Yesterday’s event served as a finals tournament for the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong. It is the largest test event held at KTSP so far.
Around 4,300 fans are said to have passed through the turnstiles within the first hour of the stadium opening, with Chris Brooke, chairman of Hong Kong China Rugby, hailing the six-hour event as “very successful”.
Kai Tak Arena hosted its first test event last month as around 5,500 tickets were sold for the Chill Thai Music Festival, which featured local boy band Mirror. The Youth Sports Ground hosted its first test event in October as Sai Kung faced off against Wong Tai Sin in a second-tier football match.
Kai Tak Stadium is set to host the Hong Kong leg of World Rugby’s SVNS series from March 28-30, marking one of the first major events held at KTSP. Coldplay will stage four concerts at the stadium in April.
The next event scheduled for Kai Tak Stadium is the ‘Four in Love Charity Live’ concert on January 18. The stadium will have a capacity of 18,000 for the event.
