A groundbreaking ceremony has been held to mark the start of construction for the Toa Payoh Integrated Development in Singapore.

The development, which was first unveiled in March 2023, is being viewed as an extension of Toa Payoh town centre. It forms part of the Sports Facilities Master Plan, which is a key recommendation under Singapore’s Vision 2030 sport blueprint.

The 12-hectare site is an existing heritage and sports park that has been reimagined and designed by Populous, in collaboration with MKPL Architects, for Sport Singapore as an integrated development.

The site will include a 10,000-seat stadium, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, an indoor sports hall featuring 22 badminton courts, and multiple sheltered futsal and tennis courts. The facilities will host sporting events and will be used by the community and some national athletes.

Attendees of the groundbreaking ceremony were given a preview of the integrated development via a refreshed 3D model, artist’s impressions, and a fly-through video.

The ceremony was attended by government officials such as Edwin Tong, Singapore’s Minister for Culture, Community and Youth. The event was also attended by Team Singapore athletes, community partners and members of the public.

Alan Goh, chief executive of Sport Singapore, said: “The Toa Payoh Integrated Development is more than just new facilities – it represents our commitment to create sporting experiences for Singaporeans to unite and improve their lives. This vibrant space will bring top-class sporting infrastructure and events closer to our community, to benefit not just our community residents but our national athletes as well.

“This is part of our ongoing efforts to develop innovative, inclusive, and citizen-centric spaces that can help to inspire Singaporeans to Live Better Through Sport. This rejuvenated development will cater to the evolving sporting needs, interests, and aspirations of our people, and we envision it to become an exciting sporting and lifestyle destination at the heart of Toa Payoh.”

The new stadium aims to be an inclusive facility that is well integrated into the overall development. It is being designed to be capable of hosting international events with its FIFA-compliant pitch, along with offering extensive player and officials facilities.

The site will also include a redeveloped NHG Toa Payoh Polyclinic and a new library. Toa Payoh Town Park will be rejuvenated as part of the overall Toa Payoh Integrated Development with enhanced greenery and new amenities.

The project is expected to be completed by 2030.
