Clark County has approved the purchase of Sam Boyd Stadium from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) for a fee of $5m (£4.1m/€4.9m).
Sam Boyd Stadium, which is located in Whitney, served as the long-term home of UNLV’s American football team, the Rebels, until 2020, when the team moved to Allegiant Stadium.
The venue has a capacity of up to 40,000 but has remained closed in recent years following the Rebels’ departure.
The university has not been able to use the stadium for any purpose as part of its agreement with the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders and the Las Vegas Stadium Authority. In exchange, the Rebels are able to play at the Raiders’ Allegiant Stadium.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper reports that Clark County commissioners have unanimously approved plans to acquire the 69-acre site from UNLV. The $5m fee was agreed upon after UNLV received an appraisal that valued the land at $10.4m and a county appraisal valued it at $0, with the two parties meeting in the middle to strike a deal.
The report notes that UNLV has been spending $500,000 a year on stadium upkeep since 2020, on top of the $20m it spent in upgrading the venue over the years.
The deal will see Sam Boyd Stadium return to county ownership. Clark County previously owned the stadium from its opening in 1971 until 1985, when UNLV assumed ownership.
Clark County has not confirmed its plans for the stadium site.
