The Football Association of Montenegro (FSCG) has announced that it hopes to have a fully operational Stadion pod Goricom by 2028, with plans advancing for a new East Stand.

Montenegro’s national stadium, otherwise known as Podgorica City Stadium, is currently effectively operating as a three-sided venue with the current East Stand dwarfed by the other three structures. However, the main shortcoming of the country’s largest stadium is set to be resolved with the introduction of the new 6,100-capacity stand.

An update on the project has been given following a meeting between the City of Podgorica, JP Sportski and the FSCG. The FSCG is financing the venture, which will also deliver media facilities, commercial spaces and two levels of parking space, across a total area of over 37,000 square metres.

The Government of Montenegro is investing in the project, with the stadium owned by the City through JP Sportski. After the meeting, FSCG secretary general, Momir Đurđevac, expressed his satisfaction that talks had begun and the first steps had been taken in the implementation of what is being looked upon as an important football infrastructure project.

Đurđevac said: “By investing in the main project of the East Stand, the Football Association has taken an initial step in solving a long-standing infrastructure problem at our largest stadium.

“After two meetings held in a short period of time and the interest shown by the City in the implementation of this project, we believe that the first concrete steps will be taken very soon so that all work can be completed within the scheduled deadlines.

“With the construction of the East Stand, we will complete the infrastructure at our largest stadium, obtain facilities that will greatly improve the conditions for performing all necessary tasks and significantly facilitate the organisation of international and domestic matches.

“I am sure that through the joint action of the Government of Montenegro, the City and the Football Association, the implementation of this project will proceed smoothly and that in the near future we will ‘close’ our largest stadium.”

Director of JP Sportski Podgorica, Aleksandar Vučković, added: “After this meeting, I believe that a tender for the selection of the contractor will be announced very soon and that in two to three years we will put into operation a new, modern East Stand, which will complete the infrastructure at the City Stadium, which is a long-standing wish of all football fans in Montenegro.

“With the change of the pitch, which will also be implemented very soon, we will get a facility that will meet all the needs of playing international matches and where we will proudly welcome all football guests.”

Stadion pod Goricom first opened in 1945.
