King Abdullah II has directed the Government of Jordan to build a new “international football stadium”.

The King made the announcement yesterday (Thursday) as he marked his 63rd birthday, with an official statement adding that he had also directed the Government to develop the sports facilities at Al Hussein Youth City, Jordan’s first sports city, in addition to continuing to develop other sports facilities in the capital, Amman, and other governorates.

The directives come in line with Royal support for sports and youth and in recognition of the achievements of Jordanian athletes. Further details over the nature of the stadium project, and its location, were not detailed. However, Jordan’s Prime Minister, Jafar Hassan, said plans are already underway.

Hassan wrote on X: “We will immediately begin work on implementing His Majesty’s directives, and we will take the necessary steps as soon as possible so that the stadium will be the nucleus of a modern and advanced Olympic sports city, the stages of which we will begin to complete over the next four years as part of the first steps in the path of establishing the new city.

“We are working to complete (the plans) and we will announce details in the coming months, as His Majesty directed us in the letter of high assignment.”

The largest stadium in Jordan is currently Amman International Stadium. Opened in 1968, the facility has a capacity of around 17,600.
