Italian Serie A football club Como 1907, along with the Municipality of Como and Populous, have presented initial concepts for the redevelopment of the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, with the goal of ensuring the venue remains “a vital part of the community”.
Como has this season returned to Serie A for the first time in 21 years having secured promotion from Serie B in 2023-24. Following confirmation of promotion back in May, work took place to expand and enhance the Sinigaglia, the club’s home since it opened in 1927.
Situated on the shores of Lake Como, the Sinigaglia provides for one of the most picturesque settings in world football, but substantial work has been required to make it ready for Serie A football. This included an increase in its capacity from 7,498 to 10,584 seats.
Due to the work that was required, Como played all three of its opening Serie A fixtures away from home, returning to the Sinigaglia for the league fixture against Bologna on September 14. Bankrolled by its Indonesian owners, the Hartono brothers, Como’s ambitions have included significantly improving the club’s stadium situation, with the initial vision presented at a press conference yesterday (Tuesday).
The first stage of the procedural process is the submission and approval of the Document of Feasibility of Project Alternatives (DOCFAP). An expected timeline for the redevelopment has set out for the design and approval process to be complete by May 2026, followed by a two-stage construction project.
The first phase would be complete by October 2027, with a targeted project completion of August 2028. Details on capacity and cost have yet to be officially disclosed, but Como is believed to be targeting a new look Sinigaglia with a capacity of between 15,000 and 20,000. The club’s owners are expected to provide the majority of funding.

All renderings presented at the press conference are conceptual images and not necessarily representative of the final design, which will be revealed after the completion of the first phase. However, the Sinigaglia project will also seek to redevelop the area surrounding the stadium with new pedestrian areas, greenery and a large car park.
Como 1907 president, Mirwan Suwarso, said in a statement: “Our goal is to ensure that the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia remains a vital part of the community. The new project must honour the legacy of the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, while making it an active and accessible space for all citizens and visitors, not only for football, but for the benefit of all, 365 days a year.”
Alessandro Rapinese, Mayor of Como, added: “This is the first phase of the process. This stadium is not just for football, but a gift to the entire community. I look forward to moving forward with the various phases and being able to enjoy Como 1907 inside the new G. Sinigaglia.”
Como 1907 and the Municipality have said they are committed to an open and transparent process and have engaged with, and will continue to engage with, fans and local residents throughout the development.
Rapinese added: “Sinigaglia must go on. We are presenting a clear future for the city. The stadium must stay there, because that is where it was born and that is where it must continue to live. We are facing a key transition. We are talking about the redevelopment of an area, but also about safety, traffic, we are focused on ensuring that this project can have a great future.”
