Wembley Stadium has become the UK’s first sports venue to have its own 5G standalone mobile network.
The technology was installed by sponsor EE and will be available for the first time during England women’s UEFA Nations League against Spain on February 26. The 5G network is designed to support the evolution of the live event experience for fans in the 90,000-capacity stadium.
“The Lionesses have made history with their ground-breaking performances on the pitch, and now we’ve made history off it with the launch of the first 5G standalone network at Wembley Stadium,” said EE chief executive Marc Allera.
“Whether it’s the Emirates FA Cup Final or one of the hotly anticipated gigs this summer, our cutting-edge mobile connectivity will ensure fans can capture, share and experience history in new ways under the iconic Wembley arch in 2025.”
The 5G deployment is part of EE’s revamp of its network at Wembley Stadium after having recently extended a multi-year partnership.
Unlike previous 5G technologies which rely on using 4G infrastructure, 5G standalone operates separately.
This gives it increased capacity and performance for more reliable internet and faster loading speeds.
The technology also has the potential to support the stadium’s wider event operations, including retail point-of-sale and television broadcasting.
