Portuguese football club SC Braga has officially opened the Estádio Amélia Morais, a new mini stadium dedicated to its women’s team.
The venue is said to be the first of its kind for a women’s football team in Portugal. SC Braga Feminino compete in the Liga BPI, the top tier of the women’s game in the country.
Estádio Amélia Morais has a capacity of 2,500 and will also serve as the home venue for SC Braga’s men’s B team.
An opening ceremony event was held earlier this week, with SC Braga president António Salvador among those in attendance. The event was also attended by Mayor of Braga Ricardo Rio, Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) president Fernando Gomes, and other government officials.
The stadium forms part of the wider Cidade Desportiva (Sports City) complex, which already included nine training pitches. Estádio Amélia Morais will also feature a 250-space car park, a medical department and LED lighting.
The opening ceremony was followed by a friendly match between the women’s teams of SC Braga and Paris Saint-Germain, which the home team won 2-1.
Salvador said: “Today, with the inauguration of the Estádio Amélia Morais, SC Braga completes the greatest challenge in its history, concluding the third phase of the Sports City project. It is a transformative infrastructure that has radically changed the club we are and our future prospects.
“The Sports City positions SC Braga as a solid and mature club. A club that had a vision for its future, approved by its members, but only achieved it thanks to the capacity generated internally and which, I must say, is very rare, if not unique, in Portugal.”
Plans for the stadium were first announced in May 2023. It had been hoped that the facility would be ready in time for the start of the 2024-25 campaign, but the opening was delayed by around six months.
