Auckland’s Eden Park has reported a net operating profit of NZ$3.678m (£1.67m/€2m/$2.1m) for the 12 months to October 31, 2024, with chief executive Nick Sautner hailing the results as “outstanding”.
The results exceeded expectations, with Sautner attributing the stadium’s performance to its diverse event offerings. Eden Park is New Zealand’s national stadium and regularly hosts the All Blacks rugby union team, as well as concerts and other events.
The stadium secured the Venue of the Year accolade at TheStadiumBusiness Awards 2024 back in June, winning out ahead of AO Arena, Citizens Bank Park, CPKC Stadium, Croke Park, Suncorp Stadium and Wembley Stadium.
Since 2011, events at Eden Park have contributed over NZ$1bn in GDP benefits to the wider Auckland region.
“This year has been another outstanding year, marked by milestones across sport, music, arts, and community events,” said Sautner.
“We witnessed the All Blacks celebrate 50 consecutive undefeated matches at The Fortress, the Blues’ Super Rugby Pacific Championship victory, P!NK making history as our first female headline concert performer, and thousands of New Zealanders coming together to reclaim the official Guinness World Records title for the world’s largest haka on our hallowed turf.
“These events reflect our dedication to delivering exceptional experiences for fans, both locally and globally.”
So far this year, Eden Park has already hosted three Coldplay concerts, two Luke Combs performances, international cricket, and the Blues’ first home game of the Super Rugby season. Upcoming events include football, T20 cricket and two All Blacks matches against Australia and South Africa.
The 2024 results fall short of the previous year, when Eden Park posted a net operating profit of NZ$8.26m, a record for the stadium.
The 2023 results were significantly boosted by the FIFA Women’s World Cup and two sold-out Ed Sheeran concerts. Eden Park hosted nine matches during the Women’s World Cup, which New Zealand staged alongside Australia.
The latest financial results have been announced as the stadium continues to advance its Eden Park 2.1 development vision, which has been categorised as a priority one project in the government’s fast-track approvals legislation.
Earlier this month, Eden Park backed a campaign to launch a new National Rugby League franchise in Auckland. Sautner said the stadium would welcome the opportunity to be the home ground of the proposed Mana Pasifika team, which will represent the Pacific diaspora.
In November, Eden Park was given the green light to double its annual concert provision to 12. The next scheduled concert at the stadium is a Metallica show on November 19.
