Turkey’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure is rolling out 5G technology at four of the country’s leading stadiums as part of a trial designed to enable such connectivity nationwide.
Rams Park, the home of Galatasaray, launched the venture for the club’s UEFA Europa League game against AZ Alkmaar on February 20.
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, announced that 5G technology will also be installed in the homes of fellow Süper Lig football clubs Fenerbahçe (Ülker Stadium), Beşiktaş (Tüpraş Stadyumu) and Trabzonspor (Papara Park) – with the latter being the next in line.
Noting that the clubs made an official request to participate, Uraloğlu said: “After Istanbul Airport, we will offer 5G to our citizens in the stadiums of our big four.”
Uraloğlu said that Turkey is continuing 5G studies in coordination with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK), private sector representatives and other relevant public institutions.
He stated that BTK has already granted test-trial permits to operators and manufacturers for 5G technology. Uraloğlu added: “Test-trial processes continue at 34 locations in cities such as İstanbul, Ankara, İzmir, Kocaeli, Tekirdağ, Eskişehir and Konya. At Istanbul Airport, our citizens can also share in this experience with their 5G compatible devices.”
Turkey is due to hold its 5G auction later this year, with full nationwide deployment targeted for 2026.
