AFL Architects has been awarded a contract to design a wide-ranging sports city project in Fumba, Zanzibar.
The complex will feature three stadiums. The two larger stadiums will have capacity for 25,000 and 10,000 people, while a smaller 2,500-seat stadium will be used for athletics and football.
The main stadium will be capable of hosting football matches, as well as concerts, conferences and other sporting events. The wider development will include training pitches, a four-star hotel, a hospital, a small passenger port, space for wind turbines, retail spots and cafes, playgrounds and outdoor tennis and volleyball courts.
The plans also include a sports centre with facilities for swimming, diving, tennis, basketball, netball, five-a-side football, table tennis and boxing. The complex will be accessible by ferry, with a pier to be constructed nearby.
The project has been commissioned by Tanzania’s Ministry of Information, Youth, Culture and Sport, and is designed to establish Zanzibar as a leading destination for sport, tourism and major events. Construction work on the project is expected to commence soon.
Nick Oliver, managing director of Globespan Infrastructure, the project’s prime contract holder, said: “It is a delight to be working with a world-class stadium architect such as AFL, bringing their expertise to a project that will have a lasting impact on Zanzibar’s sports and events landscape.”
Fumba is located on Unguja, the largest island on the Zanzibar archipelago.
