Shanghai Stadium has been announced as the venue for the inaugural World Drone Soccer Championships.
Due to take place in the Chinese city from November 15-18, the World Air Sports Federation (FAI) sanctioned event will be organised by the Aero Sports Federation of China (ASFC) and Shanghai Science and Technology Sports Management Center.
The Championships will see the 72,000-capacity Shanghai Stadium, home to Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua, transformed into a world-class drone soccer arena featuring protective cages constructed with tempered glass and shock-absorbing materials for safety and enhanced spectator visibility.
Advanced electronic scoring systems, using a combination of infrared RF sensors and photoelectric technology, will be utilised along with goal rings featuring integrated LED lighting and visual effects, in an effort to create an immersive experience for players and fans. Live match displays will be provided on giant screens, with an official event website offering real-time scoring updates.
Beyond the Championships itself, an opening ceremony will feature drone light shows. An Aeromodelling Carnival, where visitors can experience drone soccer firsthand, will explore the latest aeromodelling technology.
The 2025 World Drone Soccer Championships will feature two classes: F9A-A (larger field and drones) and F9A-B (smaller, more tactical gameplay). For the first time in FAI history, the F9A-B category will introduce a dedicated women’s division.
FAI president, Greg Principato, said: “Drone soccer is rapidly gaining popularity worldwide, and the 2025 FAI World Drone Soccer Championships will set new standards for the sport.
“Shanghai’s top-tier venue, combined with cutting-edge technology, ensures a thrilling and unforgettable competition for athletes and spectators alike.”
