Polish Ekstraklasa club GKS Katowice has played its final match at its home stadium ahead of its move to the 15,000-capacity Arena Katowice later this month.
The club bade farewell to the Stadion Miejski yesterday (Sunday) with a 1-0 win over Zagłębie Lubin.
GKS Katowice has now confirmed that the first match at the new stadium will be against local rival Górnik Zabrze on March 30.
Arena Katowice is located south of the club’s now-former stadium and will form part of a wider sports complex that also includes a sports and entertainment hall with capacity for over 3,000 people.
Club president Marcin Krupa said: “On March 30, during the derby clash between GKS Katowice and Górnik Zabrze, fans will have the opportunity to see this impressive facility in its full glory. It is going to be a special celebration, which will take place right after the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Katowice club.
“Today we are full of emotions related to the first match at the new stadium, although there will be many other events during the year during which it will be possible to admire this facility.”
GKS Katowice is due to play subsequent home matches against Puszcza Niepołomice, Legia Warsaw, Cracovia and Lech Poznań at the new stadium.
GKS Katowice is currently ninth in the Ekstraklasa after 24 matches of the season.
