Dutch football club Helmond Sport, which plays in the second-tier Eerste Divisie, marked its first match at the new GS Staalwerken Stadion on Friday with a 4-0 win against MVV Maastricht.

The first goal at the 3,600-capacity stadium was scored by Anthony van den Hurk after just 10 minutes. Mohammed Amin Doudah and Van den Hurk extended the home side’s lead before half-time, with Dario Sits adding a fourth in the 78th minute.

The match was preceded by a light show and live music. Local broadcaster Omroep Brabant reported that some fans opted not to take their seats for the first 15 minutes of the match in a protest against increasing ticket prices.

GS Staalwerken Stadion has replaced the old Stadion De Braak as Helmond Sport’s home ground. The new stadium forms part of a wider, multi-purpose complex.

The club had been due to move into the new stadium in January, but was forced to delay its first fixture due to a disagreement over what type of playing surface should be installed. There were also reports that the stadium’s lease agreement had not been finalised.

Helmond Sport has invited fans to share their thoughts on the first match at the new stadium by completing a survey. The survey quizzes fans on the atmosphere, facilities, accessibility and catering.

Helmond Sport is currently 10th in the Eerste Divisie.
