Valencia’s new Roig Arena has agreed a sponsorship deal with LaLiga football club Villarreal, while the venue has also been awarded hosting rights to basketball’s Copa del Rey.
The 18,600-capacity Roig Arena, which is set to open later this year, will be promoted on the front of Villarreal’s shirts during this weekend’s home match against Real Madrid.
The shirt sponsorship will form part of a wider collaboration between Roig Arena and Villarreal.
The partnership was unveiled during an event at the arena, which was attended by Villarreal players Raúl Albiol and Dani Parejo, along with club president Fernando Roig, whose brother Juan is leading the arena project.
In November, it emerged that Juan Roig, the billionaire president of the Mercadona supermarket chain, had assumed full control of Roig Arena. Licampa 1617, a holding company owned by Roig, now holds 100% of shares for the venue after purchasing Arena Alive SL’s remaining stake in venue operator Valencia 5 Estrellas.
Commenting on the deal with Roig Arena, Fernando Roig said: “It’s a great agreement. Roig Arena is going to be the best arena in Spain. It’s going to be a turning point for Valencia. We’ve been visiting it, and every time we come, it’s more impressive. Today is the first step in this collaboration, but we will continue collaborating because they are two sports entities, and there are a number of important synergies, and this is the first.”
As well as hosting concerts and other entertainment events, Roig Arena will serve as the home of Valencia Basket. The arena has this week added to its basketball portfolio after being awarded hosting rights to the showpiece Copa del Rey tournament for the 2026 and 2027 editions.
Spain’s Asociación de Clubes Españoles de Baloncesto (ACB) has agreed the hosting deal with the Generalitat Valenciana, with next year’s event scheduled to take place from February 19-22.
It will mark the first time since the 1940s that the Copa del Rey has been held in the same venue for two years in a row. The deal will also see the Minicopa Endesa youth tournament taking place in Valencia.
“It is a pride to host a tournament that is, in the opinion of many, the most spectacular club competition in FIBA basketball,” said Mayor of Valencia María José Catalá.
Juan Roig has invested more than €280m (£235m/$304m) into the facility, which will become the largest arena in Spain, overtaking Madrid’s Movistar Arena (formerly known as WiZink Center).
