National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) team Bay FC is due to play the Washington Spirit at San Francisco’s Oracle Park on August 23.
The fixture will mark the first professional women’s sports competition to be held at the 40,260-capacity venue, which is home to Major League Baseball’s San Francisco Giants.
It is aimed at demonstrating the club’s ambitions to accommodate fans from other regions of the Bay Area.
The club usually plays its home games at PayPal Park which is located in San Jose, the region’s southernmost county.
“Oracle Park is an iconic venue and has proven across its 25-year history to be a gathering place for the most passionate fans in sports,” said Bay FC chief executive, Brady Stewart.
“We’re eager for the opportunity to create league history alongside the Washington Spirit by being the first professional women’s teams to play at Oracle Park and thankful to the San Francisco Giants for their support of our ambitions.
“Playing a match in San Francisco allows us to connect with our fans from around the Bay Area in an incredible setting.”
The August match is set to be Bay FC’s second game at a baseball stadium in two years, with the first taking place at Chicago’s Wrigley Field which drew a NWSL record crowd of 35,038.
“As the NWSL and women’s sports as a whole continue their tremendous growth, it’s exciting to see demand from our fans to play matches in larger venues like Oracle Park,” said Washington Spirit chief executive, Kim Stone.
“It’s also important to expand the regional reach of clubs within their markets.
“We’re honoured to be taking part in such a momentous milestone in Bay FC’s history and excited to see the crowd and atmosphere in San Francisco this August!”
