The Municipality of Pisa has outlined an upgrade and expansion plan for Arena Garibaldi – Stadio Romeo Anconetani ahead of Pisa SC’s return to the top division of Italian football for the first time in over three decades.
Pisa SC last played in Serie A in 1990-91, but secured promotion from Serie B as its runner-up position was confirmed on Sunday, despite a 1-0 loss at Bari.
Following confirmation of promotion, the Municipality’s Provincial Commission for Public Entertainment Venues discussed the Arena Garibaldi, with an announcement of what is intended to be a four-stage project made yesterday (Tuesday).
Arena Garibaldi first opened in 1919 and has a current capacity of 11,293 seats. Following the end of the 2024-25 season, work will commence on the stadium, initially focusing on the Curva Sud and the away section.
Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Sports Buildings, Raffaele Latrofa, stated that the work planned for completion ahead of the 2025-26 campaign will “redesign the stands of the Arena Garibaldi”. This will raise capacity to around 12,500, with further work on hospitality and media areas being planned to meet Lega Serie A standards.
Latrofa added: “These interventions, which are in addition to those carried out during the season that have allowed us to exceed, after many years, the threshold of 10,000 spectators, demonstrate the commitment of the municipal administration in improving the structure, in view of the deserved Serie A (promotion), to guarantee all fans can attend the matches in safety.”
