Spanish LaLiga football club RC Celta de Vigo has agreed a deal that will see telecommunications company Telefónica become the preferred technological partner of its sports city project, Galicia Sports 360.

Celta intends to use the scheme to lead the digital transformation of the sports industry in Galicia, and it was deemed a project of regional interest in November by local authority the Xunta de Galicia.

As the club’s digital partner in the project, Telefónica will start from a privileged position compared to other operators in the sector to cover the complex’s technological needs in infrastructure, digital services, equipment or innovation methodologies.

Galicia Sports 360 is said to be the most ambitious project in the history of Celta. It will have an investment of around €120m (£106.4m/$129.9m) and occupy a total area of 300,000 square metres. Amongst the facilities planned under the vision for the complex is either a multi-purpose arena for up to 10,000 spectators or a stadium with a capacity of up to 4,000.

The complex will also be the setting for Celta’s new training ground, providing other facilities that will focus on sports innovation and education, tourism and catering, and sports medicine and rehabilitation.

Celta and Telefónica said: “The objective of RC Celta is to adapt to the new challenges and ways of understanding sport that the economy and the digital society are promoting, and that pose challenges as important as the management of teams with digital clients, the digitisation of clubs or the increase in income through digital business, in order to be more competitive. We therefore consider Telefónica to be the ideal technological partner to undertake this challenge.

“For its part, Telefónica considers this project strategic, and as a company faces this principle of collaboration with enormous expectations, convinced that it can contribute all its technological potential and its capacity for innovation to make Galicia Sports 360 a benchmark project in the field of sport tech.”
