Portuguese Primeira Liga football club SC Braga has commenced work on the construction of Estádio Centenário, a new 2,600-seat stadium that will serve as the home of its women’s team.
The stadium, which is scheduled for completion at the start of the 2024-25 season, will also host matches played by Braga’s men’s B team. The venue will feature a 250-space car park, medical department and LED lighting to ensure it can host evening matches.
Braga said the Estádio Centenário, which was first proposed in 2017, will become an “essential” part of the club’s infrastructure. It will form part of the wider Cidade Desportiva (Sports City) complex, which already includes nine training pitches.
The latest phase of the project will also include an SC Braga museum, which will span a total area of around 3,500 square metres. The museum is due to open in January 2025.
Braga plays its home matches at the Estádio Municipal de Braga, which was built ahead of Portugal’s hosting of the UEFA Euro 2004 national team tournament. The stadium has a capacity of over 30,000.
The club currently sits third in the Primeira Liga, six points behind top-of-the-table Benfica.
