League of Ireland Premier Division football club Derry City has submitted a planning application for redevelopment of its Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium.

The League of Ireland’s only participant from Northern Ireland, currently top of the Premier Division table, is developing plans to construct a new covered standing terrace at the Brandywell Road end of the ground.

The club is working in conjunction on the project with Derry City & Strabane District Council, which owns the stadium, with a public information day due to be held on May 31.

First opened in 1928, the Derry Journal said the redevelopment has been planned to meet a significant increase in demand for season tickets. It is expected to increase capacity at the stadium by 2,940, nearly doubling the current figure of 3,700.

The redevelopment work and construction of the proposed North Terrace will include partial demolition of the Southend Park Stand, the development of male and female toilet facilities, two sets of turnstiles and gates.
