Liga giant confirms roof plans for new Madrid stadium

Spanish Liga football club Atlético Madrid has revealed further details about the structure of the roof on its new stadium, which is due to be completed in time for the 2017-18 season.

According to Spanish daily sports newspaper AS, the roof will consist of two steel rings, connected by steel cables, and will have a total area of 46,500 square metres.

The roof will measure 286 metres between the north and south stands, and 248 metres between east and west. At its highest, it will stand at 57 metres, with the roof being no lower than 45 metres over the playing surface.

The entire stadium will feature approximately 6,000 tonnes of steel, 14 kilometres of steel cable and 83,000 square metres of fibre glass membrane. German firm Taiyo Europe will be responsible for the membrane while the metal skeleton is to be manufactured in La Coruña, Spain.

The newspaper said that the roof had been designed to keep sound inside the stadium, with noises from the crowds being reflected back from the bottom of the structure. An additional ring of floodlights will also be added to help light the pitch during night matches or bad weather.
