LA 2024 releases renderings of proposed Olympic venues

The team behind the bid to stage the 2024 summer Olympic Games in the US city of Los Angeles has released renderings of two would-be venues for the multi-sport showpiece.

LA 2024 released a visual of a modernised version of the LA Memorial Coliseum, which would stage track and field events during the Games. The 93,000-capacity venue is currently used to stage college football games played by the University of Southern California.

USC is funding a $270m (€241.8m) redevelopment of the arena, with work scheduled to begin in 2018. The stadium’s sports, training and media facilities will be upgraded as part of the renovation.

Should the LA 2024 bid be successful, organisers would work with the AECOM engineering firm to ensure the Coliseum’s smooth transition from a football arena to an athletics venue.

A rendering of a new state-of-the-art swimming venue was also released. Under the plans, USC’s Dedeaux Field baseball stadium would be transformed into a purpose-built aquatics arena. USC’s Uytengsu Aquatics Center, which staged events during the Los Angeles 1984 Games, would serve as a training centre for athletes.

“Our goal with all of our venue choices has been first and foremost to deliver an excellent field of play and the perfect conditions for the athletic performances of a lifetime,” LA 2024 chairman Casey Wasserman said. “After that, we have tried to create an interesting blend of ultra-modern venues and upgraded iconic sites.

“We are extremely grateful for the feedback we have received from all of the international sports federations. Their insight has been invaluable in helping us optimise our venue configuration, and every adjustment we have made has been a significant upgrade.”

Los Angeles faces competition from Budapest, Paris and Rome in its bid to stage the Games. The International Olympic Committee will announce the host city in September 2017.
