Verizon improving Detroit Lions Wi-Fi system

The Detroit Lions NFL team has announced that work has commenced on improvements to the much-criticised Wi-Fi service at its Ford Field stadium.

Verizon, the wireless provider that installed the existing $4m (£3.0m/€3.5m) service in 2013, said it started this week on an upgrade to the stadium service that should be completed by the start of 2017.

Ford Field was one of the first NFL arenas to introduce a Wi-Fi system after League commissioner Roger Goodell said in 2012 that franchises should give fans access to the same service they would expect at home.

However, fans have frequently complained that the Wi-Fi does not work as well as it should.

“We listened to Lions’ fans and are thrilled to announce this project is under way,” said Abby Knowles, executive director, network for Verizon. “We’re working to install the new system as quickly as possible so that we can bring the best experience to fans at every home game.”
