DC United takes hold of land for new arena

Washington DC’s authorities have officially transferred land to MLS soccer team DC United for its new 20,000-capacity stadium.

The club is due to break ground on the $300m (£235.5m/€267.5m) stadium in January or February 2017 with a construction timeline of around 15 months.

The team, which currently plays at the RFK Stadium, is due to play at the new arena from 2018, although it is almost certain to start the season at a different venue with construction unlikely to be completed in time.

The Buzzard Point site, which cost the authorities $150m, is set to hold approximately 19,000 seats, 32 suites and standing-room-only tickets during sell-outs.

The stadium, designed by Populous and Marshall Moya Design, has been named DC Stadium on an interim basis but will likely take on a new moniker before it opens. Stadium naming rights deals with MLS clubs typically range from $1-2m a year.
