Date set for Vegas NFL stadium discussions

Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval has confirmed that he will call the US state’s legislature into special session on October 10 to discuss the possibility of publicly funding a new stadium for NFL American football team the Oakland Raiders.

Sandoval has expressed his support for the Raiders’ move to Las Vegas, and the proposed relocation was given a boost last month when the Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee (SNTIC) voted unanimously in favour of recommending $750.0m (£590.0m/€671.0m) in public funding for a new stadium in the city.

Sandoval believes the move would help usher in a new era for tourism in Las Vegas. The SNTIC recommended that the 65,000-capacity stadium, which is expected to cost around $1.9bn, be partially funded by a raise in hotel taxes in the Las Vegas area.

Back in April, Raiders owner Mark Davis signalled his intention of relocating the club from Oakland, California to Las Vegas. At the time, Davis pledged to donate $500m towards the construction of the venue.

Any relocation of the club would not take place before 2020, and would require the approval of the owners of the other 23 NFL clubs.

The Raiders will spend the 2016 NFL season at O.Co Coliseum, the team's home ground since 1995, after signing a one-year lease extension in February. The agreement also includes the option for further extensions in 2017 and 2018.
