Arlington residents divided on new Rangers stadium

A poll has found that Arlington residents are split on whether or not a proposal should be passed that would fund the development of a new stadium for Major League Baseball's Texas Rangers.

The poll, which was carried out by the WFAA television channel and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram newspaper, found that 42 per cent of voters supported the proposal and 42 per cent were against it. Sixteen per cent said they were unsure how they would vote.

In May, the Rangers announced plans to build a new stadium with a retractable roof adjacent to its current Globe Life Park home. Arlington City Council approved calls for the stadium proposition to be put to a public vote, which will take place on November 9.

The city will cover half of the $1bn (£813m/€911m) cost for the ground’s development if residents vote in favour of it doing so. If given the go-ahead, the stadium is expected to be open by 2020.

The funding plan is calling on the city of Arlington to contribute $500m towards the development of the stadium. The money would be generated by raises in half-cent sales tax, room tax and car-rental tax.

Fifty-seven per cent of those polled answered “no” when asked if a new Rangers stadium is needed.
