Corinthians investigating report that its stadium is at risk of collapse

Brazilian football club Corinthians has moved to assure its fans after a newspaper report claimed its stadium is at risk of collapsing due to significant structural damage.

The Folha de S.Paulo newspaper said that a water leak in the car park at Arena Corinthians could lead to a landslide that would place the stadium in severe danger of collapsing. The report claimed the leak was discovered in June.

The car park holds 350 vehicles and is used by Corinthians fans on match days. The report adds that Corinthians and engineering firm Odebrecht, which built the stadium, were informed of the leak.

In a statement, Corinthians said it was in contact with Odebrecht over the information disclosed in the article.

“A maintenance team works daily and thoroughly checks the conditions so that the fans are in complete safety at the stadium and, to date, there is no information coming from Odebrecht to any risk of slippage,” the statement said. “The arena and the club stress that the entire construction of the stadium is undergoing an external audit, as is public knowledge.”

The 49,000-capacity stadium opened in 2014 and hosted a number of games during Brazil’s staging of the Fifa World Cup later that year.
