Earthquake damages Wellington’s Westpac Stadium

Westpac Stadium in Wellington, New Zealand, has suffered damage after Monday’s earthquake in New Zealand, leading to this weekend’s Football Federation Australia (FFA) A-League contest between Wellington Phoenix and Melbourne Victory being postponed.

FFA took the decision after receiving advice from the stadium’s operators and authorities in Wellington, whilst also holding consultations with the two clubs involved in the match.

“Our first concern is for the safety of everyone involved and from our desire to support Wellington Phoenix, Westpac Stadium and New Zealand authorities in this very difficult time,” the head of the A-League, Greg O’Rourke, said.

“Our condolences and thoughts go to the people of New Zealand who have been affected by this terrible natural disaster.”

According to reports, the damage suffered by the stadium is superficial rather than structural, although the internal concourse and seating bowl will need to be repaired. Windows and concrete sections have also cracked, while some water pipes have burst.

The repairs at the stadium are expected to take two weeks to complete.

Ticket-holders for the match will be able to claim a full refund or will be able to attend the rescheduled fixture at no extra cost. Ticketing provider Ticketek is the process of contacting ticket-holders with further details.
