Stadium sale secures speedway’s future in Plymouth

Devils

British speedway team the Plymouth Devils has secured its immediate future after selling its stadium.

The team faced an uncertain future after owner Peninsula Promotions entered liquidation last month, but an unnamed local party has now purchased its St Boniface Arena site. The sale was confirmed by Lambert Smith Hampton's, the national commercial property consultancy that brokered the deal.

According to the BBC, ex-rider Mark Phillips and Laurence Roger, the former manager of rival National League side Coventry Storm, have been announced as the promoters of the new Plymouth Speedway and will lead the team.

Subject to approval by the Speedway Control Bureau, the team will now compete in the 2017 season.

“I have known Mark since he rode for me at Somerset back in 2000-01 and we have remained good friends,” Rogers said.

“He approached me to see if I would become involved in this venture and here we are now just needing the member teams of the National League to rubber stamp our league spot at the AGM in December and I am very hopeful they will welcome the Devils back into the league.”

Phillips, formerly the promoter of Trelawny Tigers, added: “This is an early Christmas present for the Plymouth fans.”
