Madison Square Garden venues hit by data breach

Madison Square Garden Company, which operates a network of venues in the US, has urged customers to monitor their bank accounts for suspicious activity, after suffering a data security breach at five of its properties.

In a statement issued this week, the firm said that it was informed last month by issuing banks of potential abnormalities in transactions, with an investigation identifying signs of “external unauthorised access” to the payment processing system at a number of its venues.

The firm’s namesake arena in New York was one of the properties affected by the breach, as were The Theatre at Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, Beacon Theatre and the Chicago Theatre.

The company said visitors who used their cards at any of the venues between November 9, 2015, and October 24 this year may have been affected. However, the company stressed that not all cards were impacted and that it did not involve its websites, box offices or Ticketmaster.

“After learning of a transaction pattern indicating a potential data security concern, MSG immediately initiated an investigation and engaged leading computer security firms to examine its network, fix the issue and implement enhanced security measures,” a company spokesperson said.

“The independent forensic investigation shows that no further cards were accessed after the time when signs of unauthorised access were identified. Customers may use their cards with confidence at MSG venues.

“The company takes seriously the protection of customer information and is in the process of notifying customers to provide them with information on how they can protect themselves.”
