Warriors victorious in Chase Center legal battle

The Golden State Warriors NBA basketball franchise looks set to progress with plans to build its new Chase Center arena in San Francisco after the California Court of Appeals rejected an effort to block the project.

The unsuccessful appeal was filed by the Mission Bay Alliance, a group of former San Francisco officials, which that said the planned 18,000-seat, $1bn (£800m/€940m) arena would have a negative traffic impacts on emergency services at three new hospitals near to the Mission Bay site.

In response to the ruling, the Mission Bay Alliance said in a statement picked up by the San Francisco Examinernewspaper that it is “deeply disappointed” in the decision and its legal team is “reviewing the ruling” and “considering options”.

“We believe that the proposed Warriors’ arena is incompatible with the Mission Bay South neighbourhood and would result in blocked access to UCSF hospitals, dangerous air pollution, and traffic gridlock throughout the community,” the alliance said.

In its own statement, the Warriors praised the Court’s ruling: “We engaged in an extensive public planning process and we were approved by every board, agency and regulatory body we went before.

“Now our project has been upheld by the trial court and the court of appeals. This decision clears the path for us to build a new state-of-the-art sports and entertainment venue and bring the Warriors back home to San Francisco.”

Already approved by The City and Board of Supervisors, the new Chase Center is due to open in time for the 2019-20 season.
