Tokyo yesterday (Sunday) staged a special groundbreaking ceremony as work on the main stadium for the Japanese capital city’s hosting of the 2020 summer Olympic and Paralympic Games officially began.
The National Stadium, which is expected to cost $1.5bn (€1.4bn/£1.2bn), will serve as the centrepiece of the Games.
Work on the stadium is currently behind schedule after Games organisers dropped the initial design due to inflated costs and complaints over its scale and appearance. According to the Associated Press news agency, the redesigned venue is now due for completion in November 2019, ahead of the Games the following August.
Japanese Prime Minister Shizo Abe and Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike were among the various dignitaries in attendance at yesterday’s ceremony.
