AFL to continue enhanced security checks at stadiums

The AFL Aussie rules football league has said it intends to continue its review of stadium security, with enhanced checks set to remain in place.

Airport-style security screening will continue to feature at Melbourne Cricket Ground and the Etihad Stadium, with the announcement coming just days after 38 people were killed in a twin bomb attack outside a football stadium in Turkey.

However, the league did not mention plans to reintroduce controversial wire security fencing around the stadiums. The so-called ‘ring-of-steel’ was introduced last summer in the wake of the terrorist attacks on the Stade de France in Paris, but was abandoned for the AFL season.

Victoria Police Superintendent Peter O’Neil told the AFL website that the safety and security of both fans and the local community is of the “highest priority”, with the police planning to work with event managers to establish new security measures.

“We are constantly assessing the screening process for AFL matches and will work with our stakeholders should any changes be made in the future,” O’Neil said.

“Victoria Police works closely with event managers and organisations to ensure they have appropriate emergency management plans in place. These plans are tested regularly to ensure they are effective.

“We also constantly monitor and assess our preparedness and response to a range of emergencies, with strong links to intelligence and other agencies.”
