Tottenham backs full-capacity plans for Wembley

English Premier League football club Tottenham Hotspur has confirmed that it is supporting Wembley National Stadium Limited (WNSL) in its efforts to increase the number of events at which the stadium can operate at full capacity during the 2017-18 season.

Tottenham is set to call Wembley home next season while work continues on the development of its new stadium opposite White Hart Lane.

WNSL has submitted planning application to the London Borough of Brent to allow the 90,000-capacity Wembley to increase the number of events at which the national stadium can be opened at full capacity in a move that would ensure bumper crowds for Spurs games next season.

Tottenham said the plans, if approved by the London Borough of Brent, would allow the stadium operators, the club, emergency services and transport providers to put together a comprehensive management plan for the full period of the tenancy.

A Tottenham statement added: “We shall be supporting WNSL as they undertake a thorough consultation process so that residents are fully aware of the application and our commitment to ensuring that our proposed tenancy delivers positive benefits, as well as initiatives and improvements to better mitigate event day impacts on local residents and the wider community.”

Due to guidelines imposed by European football governing body Uefa regarding White Hart Lane, Tottenham played its Champions League group stage matches at Wembley this season. Games against French Ligue 1 team AS Monaco and German Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen attracted 85,000 fans. The match against Russian Premier League team CSKA Moscow only drew a crowd of 65,000, although Spurs had already been knocked out of the competition by that point.

Spurs’ new ground is expected to be ready in time for the start of the 2018-19 campaign, although the club does have an option to play at Wembley for an extra season should the project fall behind schedule.
