MLB’s Indians detail new lighting system in $2.1m ballpark revamp

Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise the Cleveland Indians has revealed it will install a new LED lighting system at its Progressive Field ballpark as part of a $2.1m (€2m/£1.7m) renovation project at the venue.

According to the CrainsCleveland.com website, the new lighting setup will be in place in time for the start of the 2017 season.

The ballpark’s existing 674 light fixtures, which have already been taken down, used 1,500-watt metal halide bulbs. The new system will comprise 456 1,000-watt LED fixtures, with the lights to offer up to 30 per cent more brightness.

LED lights are a common feature in sports venues around the world, including a number of venues in the MLB. The Indians are believed to be one of six teams adding an LED lighting system for the coming campaign.

Seth Cooper, senior director of facility operations for the Indians, said that the new system could save the team up to 70 per cent on annual energy usage. He added: “It should be much brighter, it should provide a much different vibe, a different feel, in the ballpark.”
