1860 snaps up Liverpool CEO as stadium search continues

1860 Munich has poached Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre to assist in the German 2.Bundesliga football club’s efforts to move to a new stadium.

1860 has shared the 75,000-capacity Allianz Arena with city rival Bayern since its opening in 2005, but has long courted a move to a ground of its own.

Ayre (pictured) was a key figure in overseeing Liverpool’s Main Stand redevelopment, which was completed last year.

Having joined the club as a commercial director 10 years ago, Ayre became chief executive in 2013. He announced his intention to step down from the role at the end of the 2016-17 season last year, but it has now been confirmed that he will leave at the end of February.

His position at 1860 and his start date have not been confirmed.

Ayre said that 1860 “undoubtedly belongs back in the Bundesliga” and added: “There is enormous potential to improve this state of affairs.”
