Croke Park posts ‘very positive’ financial results

Croke Park stadium director Peter McKenna has hailed a “very, very positive” set of accounts as part of the Gaelic Athletic Association’s 2016 financial report.

The stadium generated turnover of €41.5m (£36m/$45m) – a year-on-year increase of almost €5m.

However, according to the Irish Mirror, the UK’s vote back in June to leave the European Union has already had an impact.

“It would be in the hundreds of thousands, not in the millions. Say €300,000, something like that,” said McKenna, who added that certain conferences that the venue “anticipated coming across” ultimately did not.

“Anything that gives market uncertainty makes people less anxious to have marketing conferences and so on. Not Brexit in and of itself, more the uncertainty.”

Rock bands Coldplay and U2 are scheduled to perform at Croke Park this July, while it is hoped that a third big concert can be lined up in June.

McKenna also said that two Bruce Springsteen concerts last June that topped the box office worldwide of the first six months of 2016 had put “Croke Park on a world map”.

He added: “It’s a fantastic boost for us and it’s a great boost for the city.”
