First Data seals Mets naming-rights deal

The New York Mets Major League Baseball franchise has announced a 10-year marketing partnership with commerce technology company First Data.

The Mets’ spring training ground in Port St. Lucie, formerly called Tradition Field, has been renamed First Data Field under the agreement.

In November the St. Lucie County Commissioners unanimously approved a new Facilities Use Agreement with the Mets to provide $55m (€52m/£44m) in renovations to First Data Field, keeping the Mets in Port St. Lucie for the next 25 years.

Proposed improvements to the stadium will include an outfield boardwalk, a new entrance, new major league and minor league clubhouses and updated offices and locker rooms.

“We are proud to expand our partnership with the Mets, a world-class organisation committed to winning on the diamond and providing an outstanding fan experience in the stands, whether at Citi Field or at First Data Field,” said First Data chief executive Frank Bisignano. “While we root for the Mets under the Florida sun, our payments technology will help to power commerce for the Mets and their legion of fans.”

First Data Field will host 18 spring training games in 2017.

The 7,000-capacity First Data Field was built in 1988 when the Mets moved their spring training operation to Port St. Lucie.
