Cagliari cleared to move into temporary stadium

Italian Serie A football club Cagliari has been granted permission to move into a temporary stadium while work on its new, permanent home is carried out.

In May, the team announced plans to play home matches at the 16,000-capacity Sardegna Arena temporary venue, which is located in the car parks of the under-construction Sant’Elia.

In a statement on its official website, Cagliari has now said that it has secured approval from the Provincial Committee for Public Space Auditing, Cagliari City Council, Lega Calcio and the Italian Football Federation to begin playing at the temporary venue.

Cagliari’s first game at the Sardegna Arena will be against Crotone on September 10.

In May, Cagliari said it would commit €8m ($9.5m/£7.3m) to the Sardegna Arena project and had hoped to open the stadium last month. The main structure for the Sardegna Arena is made of steel and features a main grandstand.

Cagliari’s permanent Sant’Elia home is scheduled for completion in two years’ time and once open, will have a total capacity of 21,000.

The existing Stadio Comunale Sant’Elia staged England’s three group games against Ireland, Holland and Egypt at the Fifa World Cup in 1990.

Serie A will have representation at the annual TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Summit taking place in Barcelona on 28-29 November. AS Roma will be in attendance to represent the Stadio Della Roma project.
