New research from Marketing Manchester has revealed the estimated economic impact of Emirates Old Trafford’s major events in 2023 to be worth in excess of £22.5m (€26.1m/$28.6m) to the local economy.

Marketing Manchester is a not-for-profit agency charged with promoting Greater Manchester on a national and international stage. The company has helped Emirates Old Trafford evaluate across a range of economic-related impacts associated with staging major sporting and entertainment events.

During 2023, Emirates Old Trafford hosted international cricket, Vitality Blast, The Hundred, and two sold-out Arctic Monkeys concerts. Over 400,000 tickets were bought for major events at the stadium, while a further 150,000 guests either stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn or attended conferences and events throughout the year.

This year also saw Emirates Old Trafford host TheStadiumBusiness Summit on June 28-29 and TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Summit on December 6-7.

Marketing Manchester has calculated the economic impact figures based on the number of visitors to the stadium’s highest-attended events and by using the eventIMPACTS Toolkit. The research estimates the broader financial impact of these visitors by using industry benchmarks for spending habits such as accommodation and food and beverage costs.

2023 was a milestone year for the venue as it completed a 15-year, £75m redevelopment. A new members’ restaurant and lower-tier stand and concourse opened ahead of July’s Ashes Test, while last month the expanded Hilton Garden Inn was officially launched.

Daniel Gidney, Lancashire Cricket chief executive, said: “2023 has been another momentous year for Lancashire Cricket and Emirates Old Trafford. The venue delivered another incredible run of events that continue to make a major impact beyond the stadium in supporting the local economy.”

Gidney added: “With the major redevelopment work now complete and more incredible live events confirmed in 2024, these are really exciting times for Lancashire Cricket and Emirates Old Trafford as a venue. We look forward to welcoming many more fans through the doors in 2024 and continuing to see these guests support the local business community.”

Next year will see Emirates Old Trafford host England vs Sri Lanka in the first Test of a three-game series, as well as a T20 match against Australia on September 15. It will also host County Championship, One Day Cup, Vitality Blast and The Hundred matches.

In addition to cricket, Emirates Old Trafford will stage a Green Day concert on June 21, with Foo Fighters also scheduled to play two nights at the stadium on June 13 and June 15.
