José Luis Palma, president of Uruguayan football club Liverpool, has detailed plans for a new 12,000-capacity stadium, with work set to begin in 2025.

Liverpool was crowned Primera División champion for the first time at the weekend. Speaking on television after the title win, Palma said the new stadium would be named El Templo de Liverpool (Temple of Liverpool) and would be built on the site of the club’s current home, Estadio Belvedere.

Liverpool is based in the capital city of Montevideo and owns Estadio Belvedere, which opened in 1919. Work on the new stadium will not begin until 2025 as the club intends on upgrading its sports complex in 2024.

Speaking on the Punto Penal programme on Uruguay’s Channel 10, Palma said: “We have a model that was made in accordance with urban planning regulations. There is a departmental plan that allows some things and not others. Adapting to all regulatory requirements, we can aspire to a stadium with that capacity. Height is not unlimited.”

The club is set to invest $12m (£9.5m/€10.9m) into the new stadium, which Palma said would be capable of hosting international matches.

Palma added: “We intend for it to be a model stadium. It will be a stadium from scratch, there will be nothing left (of the old stadium). The Copa Sudamericana will be played there at a certain level. We cannot make a bigger stadium because it is not worth it.”
