Controlled explosion at France v Iceland Euro 2016 clash

French police have confirmed that they carried out a controlled explosion prior to the Euro 2016 quarter-final match between France and Iceland at the Stade de France in Paris yesterday (Sunday).

The Associated Press news agency reported that the explosion took place on a car parked near the stadium. The car was parked in a restricted area.

Security officials in France have been quick to react to any suspicious activities or vehicles during the football tournament.

In November, the same stadium, which was hosting a national team friendly match between France and Germany, was one of several targets for suicide bombers as part of a series of attacks in the city. Three suicide bombers failed to gain access to the stadium before detonating their devices outside, killing one bystander.

The match went ahead without any further disruptions, with France beating Iceland 5-2 to progress to a semi-final clash with Germany.
