Work begins on ‘world’s biggest cricket stadium’ in India

Parimal Nathwani, vice-president of the Gujarat Cricket Association, was part of a group that yesterday (Monday) laid the foundation stone for what is set to be the world’s biggest cricket stadium.

The project will see the existing Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad, India, more than double in size from 50,000 seats to a capacity of approximately 110,000, thus surpassing the current largest cricket venue in the world, Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia, which can seat just over 100,000 people.

According to the Indian Express, Nathwani said the project, which is yet to be given an official timescale, will cost Rs 700 crore (€96.5m/$102.9m/£84.9m).

“The stadium will have 76 corporate boxes, four dressing rooms, a club house and an Olympic-size swimming pool,” Nathwani said. “Engineering firm L&T has awarded the work to build this stadium through tender process.”

Nathwani added that the redeveloped stadium is likely to adopt a new name.
