Russian Lego advert pokes fun at Zenit Arena delays

A Russian television channel has made light of the problems affecting construction work at St Petersburg’s Zenit Arena by releasing an advert for an “unfinishable” Lego set.

Zenit Arena is due to stage games during football’s Fifa World Cup in 2018 but has been beset by a number of delays since development work began back in 2007.

Russian entertainment channel 2×2 has seen the funny side, depicting the stadium in a new advert featuring a puzzled-looking child that does not seem able to complete his model stadium.

“Does your child finish their construction sets too quickly?” the voiceover asks, according to the BBC. “Give them Lego Zenit Arena. You won’t be able to build it at the first, second and even third attempt!” It adds: “Even your child will understand the real meaning of ‘useless waste of money’.”

The 69,000-capacity facility finally appears to be nearing completion and is due to stage matches during this summer’s Confederations Cup. Fifa recently moved to allay fears by insisting the stadium would be ready for the tournament, which takes place from June 17 to July 2.

A Russian Premier League game between Zenit Saint Petersburg and Ural Yekaterinburg is scheduled to take place at Zenit Arena on April 23, with the fixture to serve as a test match ahead of the Confederations Cup.
