Tokyo 2020 confirms football venue for summer Olympics

The Tokyo 2020 local organising committee for the summer Olympic Games has announced that the Ibaraki Kashima Stadium will serve as a football venue for the Japanese capital’s hosting of the sporting spectacle.

The venue has a capacity of 40,728 and is currently home to Japanese J1 League club Kashima Antlers.

The Ibaraki Kashima Stadium (pictured) was also one of a number of stadiums used during the 2002 Fifa World Cup national football team tournament, which took place in Japan and South Korea. The venue hosted three group stage matches.

The facility has recently undergone repair work after it was damaged during the Tōhoku earthquake and subsequent tsunami. The project was supported by Fifa, football’s global governing body, and various stakeholders.
