The New South Wales government has invited design companies to submit proposals to transform the area surrounding ANZ Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park ahead of the 20th anniversary of the city’s Olympic Games.
It will mark the precinct’s first major upgrade since the Games and there are plans to turn the space into a green, people-friendly area. The winning company will be given Aus$100,000 (£55,000/€62,000/$69,000) and be tasked with carrying out a detailed redesign of the space.
Companies will have until October 8 to express an interest in the tender and a winner will be announced by next March.
“This is a chance for world-class urban designers, landscape architects and architects to put their stamp on Australia’s premier sport and major events destination,” New South Wales’ Planning and Public Spaces Minister Rob Stokes said, according to the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper.
He added: “The Stadia Precinct upgrade will complement the planned redevelopment of ANZ Stadium by the NSW government, and the end result will be a world-class precinct that offers the best possible experience for visitors to the Park, inside and outside the stadium.
“This is the biggest design competition to be held at Sydney Olympic Park since it was initially developed for the Olympic Games and we are seeking submissions from around the world.”
ANZ Stadium is set to undergo a wider development following the 2020 State Of Origin series. The venue will be redeveloped into a rectangular stadium seating between 70,000 and 75,000 fans, with work expected to be completed in time for the 2023 NRL rugby league season.
